The insurance company for the owners of the Jacob Wirth Restaurant in Boston is suing three wood refinishing companies alleging they caused a fire with estimated damages of $3.8 million, Universal Hub reported.

The fire occurred June 24, 2024, while the building was under renovation. The Jacob Wirth Restaurant is an official Boston landmark that had been the city's second oldest continuously operating restaurant since 1868.

The Scottsdale Insurance Company blames American Builder Hardwood Floor, Next Goal Corp. and Alpha Floor Sanding for causing the fire by allegedly failing to or improperly disposing of flammable substances used for wood refinishing.

One of the companies was hired to "perform hardwood floor refinishing," another was doing similar work on the restaurant's bar and the third was doing "wood refinishing of the wall paneling," the insurer says.

The three companies have until July 17 to answer the complaint.
